XX stands for toner color codes: 00 = Black (BK), 01 = Cyan (C), 02 = Magenta (M), 03 = Yellow (Y).

HP printers fall into two categories: models with display screen and models without display screen. We first elaborate on common error codes for screen-equipped printers.

I. Printers with Display Screen

1. Alternating prompts: 10.10.XX Supply & Memory Error, printing disabled

This error means no data communication between printer and cartridge chip. Root causes include 4 scenarios:

  1. No chip mounted on toner cartridge;

  2. Printer fails to detect the chip;

  3. Chip installed in reversed orientation;

  4. Mismatched chip model incompatible with the printer.

Solutions: Inspect cartridge chip mounting status, printer contact probes, chip installation direction and chip model compatibility one by one. Rectify faults accordingly: replace damaged probes, reposition chips correctly or fit matching replacement chips.

2. Alternating prompts: 10.00.XX Supply & Memory Error

Communication is established but interrupted abnormally. Triggered mainly by static interference from poor testing environment or defective chips.

Solutions: Verify anti-static setup compliance or replace with qualified chips for retest.

3. Prompt: Replace ****Cartridge; abnormal data fluctuation on test page & insufficient printed yield

The chip reaches its rated service lifespan and requires full cartridge + chip replacement.

Possible causes:

  • Chip has exhausted rated print pages;

  • Insufficient toner inside cartridge leads to undetected toner and rewritten chip data;

  • Defective cartridge structure prevents toner level detection, resulting in modified chip information.

Solutions:

  • Replace complete original cartridge and chip if page quota is exhausted;

  • Check refilled toner weight against standard specification; test chips with standard full-weight cartridges if toner is underfilled;

  • Shake new cartridges horizontally several times before installation to evenly distribute toner inside hopper.

4. On-screen alert: Incorrect Supply

Wrong-color chip is fitted on the cartridge (cross-color mixing).

Solutions: Check whether chips are installed on corresponding color cartridges and correct misplaced chips promptly.

5. Other miscellaneous error codes

Fault originates from printer hardware/firmware instead of chips, mostly paper out, paper jam or firmware malfunction.

Solutions: Load paper or clear jammed sheets for paper-related issues; engage professional maintenance technicians for firmware failures.

II. Printers without Display Screen (Diagnosed via Control Panel LED Status: BK/C/M/Y for respective colors)

1. Corresponding color LED stays steadily lit

No data exchange between printer and matching cartridge chip, caused by six possible issues:

  1. Cartridge missing chip;

  2. Printer contact malfunction failing chip detection;

  3. Reversed chip installation;

  4. Incompatible chip model;

  5. Static interference from improper test environment disrupting communication;

  6. Defective original chip.

Solutions: Check chip installation, printer probe integrity, chip direction, model matching and anti-static protection; replace faulty components as needed and retest after correction.

2. Corresponding color LED flashes continuously

Low residual data on chip indicates near-end-of-service life. Causes cover exhausted rated print yield, underfilled toner or flawed cartridge structure causing false chip data revision due to unrecognizable toner volume.

Solutions: Replace with brand-new cartridge and chip. Shake new cartridges side to side prior to use for even toner dispersion; verify toner filling weight and test chips with standard cartridges when toner weight is below requirement.

3. General Attention LED keeps lit or blinking

Trouble unrelated to cartridge chips, resulting from paper shortage, paper jam or abnormal printer firmware.

Solutions: Refill paper or clear paper jam; arrange professional maintenance for firmware breakdowns.
